Chef - Andrew Pern, The Star Inn

Andrew regards himself as just a chapter in The Star's long history, believed to date back to the 14th century. He acquired the pub in a near-derelict state in 1996 and since then the thatched inn has not only been restored and extended while enhancing its abundant character, but Andrew has picked up a long list of celebrated awards along the way. Recently voted 19th in the National Restaurant Awards Top 100 UK Restaurants, The Star has consistently received prestigious accolades from industry professionals and is much loved by foodies and locals alike - in  short a great tribute to Andrew and his head chef Steve Smith.

The extensive use of local seasonal produce provided through a network of suppliers Andrew has nurtured over the years reflects not just his 'modern Yorkshire' cooking style but his own roots as a famer's son from the North York Moors. He says the moors were an idyllic place to live and learn about nature's larder; seafood from the North Sea, lamb, beef and pork reared with pride by neighbours, game shoots alongside the Esk Valley and grouse from the purple-shrouded moors. "Without ever being conscious of it," he says, "the food you were eating was teaching you about the seasons."

The Star Inn at Harome is ranked number three in the Budweiser Budvar Top 50 Gastropub rankings for 2013. This is the second year that Andrew Pern's Star Inn has been ranked third and is once again the top ranked gastropub in Britain north of Watford.
