Food Trail - On top of the wold - Cheese and beer from the wolds

1. The Pipe and Glass Inn
Your culinary trail begins with a chance to meet your guide for the day and others joining this culinary trail over light refreshments served in the relaxed atmosphere of James and Kate Mackenzie's Pipe and Glass Inn, the only holder of a Michelin Star in East Yorkshire. What's more you will set off on the trail with a packed lunch specially prepared by James Mackenzie's chefs.
2. Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil
Our first stop is Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil in Thixendale where we will see how cold-pressed extra virgin oil is made and learn all about the benefits of using locally produced rapeseed oil as the primary oil in both professional kitchens and at home. What’s more you will get to meet the team which includes three generations of the Palmer family and see how the full range of flavoured oils, dressings and mayonnaise is prepared right on the farm where the seed is grown. Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil is a low food miles champion too.
3. Wold Top Brewery
You will travel across some of the finest wolds' landscape en route to the Wold Top Brewery located on a farm near Wold Newton in the heart of the landscape made famous by Yorkshire's David Hockney. On the way we’ll point out key landmarks and tell you something of the flavour of this special area. Arriving at the brewery you’ll meet Tom and Gill Mellor and have an amazing view of the sea in one direction and rolling wolds in the other.
But, there's more to Wold Top beers than the stunning location in which they are produced as will become clear on your brewery tour. Here you will learn about the British craft brewing revival and the sourcing of the key ingredients, including truly local barley. Then there will be an opportunity to taste and compare a number of them while enjoying your picnic lunch. We're sure that you will then understand why Wold Top beers are sought after locally and increasingly further afield. Indeed, as far afield as Canada.
4. Spirit of Yorkshire distillery
Already people are speaking highly of Yorkshire's first and very own Spirit of Yorkshire distillery even though the spirit cannot be called whisky until later in 2019. We include a guided tour of the distillery and an opportunity to taste the developing spirit. The wash from which Spirit of Yorkshire malt whisky is distilled is from nearby Wold Top brewery using barley grown on the farm, malted in Flamborough and using water from beneath the farm. there will be time to indulge with purchases of whisky from around the world if you so wish.
5. Staal Smokehouse
Next we visit Staal Smokehouse, a great place to discover how an artisan smokehouse works and the great range of smoked fish, chicken and duck produced by Justin Staal. His technique and skill deliver consistently great and award-winning smoked foods, including the cold pressed rapeseed oil he cold smokes for Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil, visited earlier in the day. The delicately smoked kippers are a favourite of ours as is the haddock and ...... I could go on and on as we love everything he does including the smoked rapeseed oil which is always to be found in the Yorkshire Food Finder kitchen.
6. James Mackenzie cooks for you
On your return to the Pipe and Glass Inn, chef James Mackenzie will show you round his kitchen, explaining how they cook to the standard of a one star Michelin restaurant. Then, before dinner, James will give you a short cookery demonstration so that you can see him cooking at first hand. Your day will then conclude with dinner and a menu specially chosen to showcase the fine produce from the Yorkshire Wolds.
